WHAT IS NATIONAL
CRIMEBEAT?

NATIONAL CRIMEBEAT is the charity of the Shrievalty Association, The Association of High Sheriffs of England & Wales. The charity encourages young people to get involved with crime reduction activities and create safer communities. This is done through a network of local Crimebeat Schemes, which High Sheriffs have set up in their "bailiwicks" (Counties of Office).

WHAT DO LOCAL CRIMEBEAT SCHEMES DO?

Each local Crimebeat scheme encourages groups of young people to develop their ideas on crime reduction and turn them into successful projects. A large number of young people have become involved in these projects and they in turn pass on benefits of their work to their peers and the wider community. Young people are solving problems that matter to them in their communities through Crimebeat initiatives.

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO TAKE PART?

Crimebeat schemes offer a great chance for young people between the ages of 5 & 25 to show what they can do and how their project can help them and others in their area.

CAN I GET A GRANT TO HELP ME SET UP A PROJECT?

Most Crimebeat Schemes give grants of up to £500 to assist in setting up projects, or they operate a competition with prize money available to the winning groups

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I'VE FINISHED MY PROJECT?

All Crimebeat schemes are championed by the High Sheriff who each year is invited to submit one project to the National Crimebeat Awards.

WHAT SORTS OF PROJECTS ARE SUITABLE?

Projects can be of wide range and interest, and have in the past included helping older people make their homes safer, a bus pass scheme on school buses to reduce disruptive behaviour, support and counselling groups at school, stranger danger projects, drug and alcohol information and advice. The list goes on. Projects have in the past taken the form of music CDs, video productions, environmental clear up solutions, drama presentations and many other innovative ways of getting a message across or showing positive action.

WHAT DO HIGH
SHERIFFS DO?
For more than 1,000 years High Sheriffs in England and Wales have had a responsibility for upholding law and order.Duties include attendance at royal visits to their county, the well being and protection of Her Majesty's High Court Judges when on Circuit in the county and attending to them during their legal terms. Today High Sheriffs work closely with police, probation, local authorities, education and other agencies to show how young people care for their communities.

WHAT ARE THE NATIONAL CRIMEBEAT AWARDS?

Each year High Sheriffs submit the best example they have found of young people working to create safer communities.

The projects are judged against set criteria which emphasise the part played by young people themselves and the influence their work has had on other young people and the wider community.

MORE PRIZES & CERTIFICATES?

YES: Prizes of £1,000 for first, £750 for second, £500 for third are awarded by Crimestoppers Trust. The winning teams each receive a certificate and in addition Highly Commended certificates are awarded.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

The next step is to click on the map to find your local Crimebeat Scheme. Then have a think about problems that you feel need addressing in your area and what you believe could be done to make things better. Then contact your local Crimebeat scheme to see how they can help you. There might be an application form to fill in if funding is available or else there might be an awards scheme you can enter. However your Crimebeat Scheme operates, get in touch and enjoy your project. GOOD LUCK!

You might have already been involved in a project that is now finished that you'd like to tell your local Crimebeat scheme about. Your High Sheriff will be very interested in your project if it has involved making your community a safer place to be.
